What is Enshittification?
This phrase which was coined by Cory Doctorow to describe why products get worse over time.
This happens in phases:
- They make a platform that is good to their users
- They change the platform to be good for their business customers
- They change the platform again to be good for share price
- Then people stop using it
Whilst initially focused on two-sided market places (that connects buyers with sellers) this term is being used to describe the general process of product degradation as businesses focus more on profits than on creating good product.
If a business fails to invest in innovation, looking for new ways to create and capture value, the only remaining quick alternative to profit is to squeeze what they have - making the product cheaper or increasing pricing.
